Which Conditioner is best for Dry and Frizzy Hair

Which Conditioner is best for Dry and Frizzy Hair

What’s the number one enemy of freshly blow-dried hair? Frizz! But not anymore with the best conditioner for frizzy hair.

Frizz is what happens if the strands of your hair do not lie flat and gives you an unkempt look.

Our hair is made of several layers of protein arranged in the form of cuticles. When these cuticles lift up, it gives rise to frizz.

What to know before buying the best conditioner for frizzy hair?

We’ve looked at several factors before reviewing the products in this article. These will help you make a better decision and select the right product for your hair.

Before buying a product make sure you check the following:

Moisturizing power: Dry hair is often the number one reason for frizz. So a hydrating conditioner will automatically help you keep frizz in control.

The best way to check how well a conditioner will make your hair soft is to see the ingredients.

Shea butter, coconut oil, argan oil, and other emollients that keep moisture locked into hair.

Price: A conditioner, especially a wash-out conditioner is a product you may use several times a week.

Even if the product is highly priced, it might be super conditioning, so you need only use a little amount. This gives you value for money too.

So check if the particular product is as good for your wallet as it is for your head.

Silicones: Silicones are a very very common ingredient in hair products, especially for frizz-control conditioners.

A form of silicone called dimethicone is generally used in a conditioner for frizzy hair. This helps smoothen hair cuticles, leaving hair soft and shiny.

But it can build-up over time, leaving hair limp. It can also cause blockage in hair follicles.

So while it’s not exactly a “harmful” ingredient, it’s best to avoid it.

Even if you do find a conditioner that has silicone, make sure you use a clarifying shampoo at least once a week to get rid of the product build-up.

It’s a very common phenomenon if you have dry or damaged hair.

If you live in very humid conditions, the water content can seep into hair strands, worsening frizz.

How I tested the best conditoners for frizzy hair?

After using these conditioners for my own frizzy hair I rated them on a scale of 1-5 based on the following parameters. These include:

  • Frizz Control - Firstly I checked the smoothening power of the shampoo and how well it controlled frizz.
  • Moisturizing Power - I then checked how nourishing it is and if it contains ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, etc.
  • Affordability - The price of the conditioner and the quantity given for the price was also a huge factor.
  • Damage Repair - I also checked if the conditioners helped repair damaged hair

Shea Moisture Strengthen & Restore Leave-In Conditioner

best deep conditioner for frizzy hair

I have curly hair and the one hair type most prone to frizz is the African American texture. Also known as type 4b and 4c hair!

Finding the right conditioner for frizzy hair for my type can get difficult as it requires more nourishment. But this SheaMoisture product has hit the nail on the head!

This is a leave-in conditioner for frizzy hair and contains shea butter, Jamaican black castor oil, peppermint extracts among other ingredients.

I found that the best part about this conditioner is that it is super nourishing and locks in moisture on high porosity curls like mine!

how to use conditioner for frizzy hair

It's also super nourishing if you ultra-dry hair and will keep your hair shiny. I often use it in my Curly Girl Method routine to scruch my curls and it always brings out the texture so well.

However, there is one little drawback. While it’s the perfect conditioner for frizzy curly hair, we suggest women with fine hair choose something lighter like the Briogeo conditioner.

This product can weigh down fine, thin hair and leave your tresses looking limp.

So this choose this product if you have curly frizzy hair.

Pros

  • Shea butter formula is very moisturizing
  • Good for curly hair as it helps add definition
  • Castor oil helps epairs split ends
  • Suits African American hair as it's very heavy and nourishing
  • Safe on color-treated hair and chemically-processed hair

Cons:

  • Can weigh down straight, fine hair

Chief Ingredients:

  • Shea butter,  coconut oil, Jamaican black castor oil, peppermint

Silicones Present - No

  • Frizz Control - 4/5
  • Moisturizing Power - 5/5
  • Affordability - 4/5
  • Damage Repair - 4/5

Matrix Biolage Smooth Proof Conditioner

best conditioner for fine frizzy hair

If you have an oily scalp or very fine thin hair then I'd say this this Matrix Biolage Smooth Proof Conditioner is a good choice.

Usually, a conditioner for frizzy hair contains a lot of emollients, oils, creams, and other rich ingredients.

While these are amazing for coarse type 4 hair or very dry hair, it can leave fine tresses looking limp and greasy.

But this what I loved so much about this Matrix Conditioner is that it's water-based! So despite the glycerin and Camellia oil formula it feels light on your hair.

And it’s very good at keeping the frizz at bay. No matter how humid the climate you’re living in.

best moisturizing conditioner for dry hair

I don’t think it’ll work very well on African American hair given its light moisturizing capabilities. I always have to use it in addition to a heavier hair cream.

And another thing that disappointed me was the fragrance. It is simply too strong!

Besides, artificial scents can also dry out strands if used continuously.

Pros

  • Lightweight as it's water-based so good for oily scalps
  • Superb frizz control thanks to the glycerin

Cons

  • Contains alcohol which can dry hair
  • Perfume too overpowering for some
  • Not for curls or dry hair as it's too lightweight
  • Does not detangle hair as there's very little slip

Chief Ingredients:

  • Glycerin, Camellia seed oil

Silicones Present - No

  • Frizz Control - 4.5/5
  • Moisturizing Power - 3.5/5
  • Affordability - 3.5/5
  • Damage Repair - 4/5

Briogeo Farewell Frizz Rosarco Milk Leave-In Conditioning Spray

best leave in conditioner for frizzy hair

After going through the SheaMoisture and Matrix conditioners I wanted something lightweight yet moisturizing. And I was glad to find this Briogeo Farewell Frizz Leave-In Conditioner spray as it's perfect.

Firstly, I liked how the spray design makes it easy to use on curls.

Then there’s the nourishing formula. You’ll see rosehip oil, argan oil, and vitamin E among the ingredients.

Now these help retain moisture on your strands and smoothen the cuticles on my hair, preventing frizz.

best conditioner for frizzy hair quora

The best part about this Briogeo conditioner for frizzy hair is that my chemically processed hair loved it.

If you’re used to styling your hair too often using heat tools or changing the hair colors every now like me then, this conditioner will help repair any damage.

what's the best conditioner for frizzy hair

Now for the disappointing bit. It’s a bit too pricey for my liking.

It might be of value to those with fine, straight hair as they need only a little spray of the conditioner to get soft, silky locks.

But people with curly or kinky hair need a lot more product to make it work.

Pros

  • Natural ingredients so it's safe for sensitive scalp
  • Easy to use spray design that helps distribute it evenly
  • Good for damaged hair as it contains repairing rosehip oil
  • Safe on color-treated hair as it protects fading
  • Vegan and cruelty free

Cons

  • Expensive
  • A lot of product needs to be used for curly hair

Chief Ingredients:

  • Coconut oil, rosehip oil, argan oil

Silicones Present - No

  • Frizz Control - 4.5/5
  • Moisturizing Power - 4/5
  • Affordability - 3/5
  • Damage Repair - 4/5

John Frieda Frizz Ease Daily Nourishment Conditioner

best drugstore products for frizzy hair

A good conditioner for frizzy hair shouldn’t cost your entire paycheck.

So we went looking for an affordable (yet effective) product and found this John Frieda Conditioner.

The product is super hydrating, and instantly so. There’s silk proteins and a host of vitamins that nourish your hair.

What won our hearts was the way this conditioner brings out the shine on color-treated hair.

It even forms a protective layer on hair cuticles that prevent any damage from tools like hair straighteners or curling wands.

If you find your hair in knots and tangles after taking a shower, this conditioner will help you detangle it too.

But where’s the catch you ask? Well, this product contains silicones in the form of dimethicone.

It’s this ingredient that gives the conditioner a good slip and helps add shine and leaves hair manageable.

Silicones are, however, known to cause product build-up and if accumulated on the scalp they can block nutrients from reaching your hair follicles.

Our suggestion? Use a clarifying shampoo or use an apple cider vinegar rinse to get rid of all product build-up once a week.

best anti frizz conditioner

A lot of users have also noticed that this John Freida product works better as a leave-in conditioner.

So you can use a different wash out conditioner, like the OGX one and use this product sometimes for styling hair.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Adds brilliant shine
  • Helps detangle hair
  • Safe for color-treated hair
  • Protects from heat damage

Cons

  • Not for fine hair
  • Can cause build-up in the long run
  • Scent too strong for some people

Chief Ingredients:

  • Silk proteins, green tea extracts, vitamin A, C, and E

Silicones Present - Yes

  • Frizz Control - 4.5/5
  • Moisturizing Power - 4/5
  • Affordability - 4.5/5
  • Damage Repair - 4/5

OGX Moroccan Argan Oil Conditioner

best conditioner for damaged hair 2021

OGX is a cult beauty brand by this point. And the OGX Moroccan Argan Oil Conditioner one of the best drugstore products for frizzy hair.

As the name suggests, the chief ingredient here is Moroccan argan oil which is packed with vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids.

These are the ingredients required to add softness and shine to tresses. They also help close down open hair cuticles that lead to frizz.

This conditioner for frizzy hair also contains a UV filter, so it helps increase the longevity of hair color by preventing it from fading in the sun.

best drugstore products for frizzy hair

Moroccan oil is great for curly and dry hair, but we don’t recommend it for oily hair or those with fine, straight textures.

It’ll make your locks look limp and greasy.

Unfortunately, this OGX product contains alcohol and silicones.

Silicones can cause build-up if not washed away with a powerful cleanser and alcohol can worsen irritation on sensitive scalps.

Pros

  • Super nourishing
  • Good for curly hair
  • Safe on color-treated hair
  • Prevents heat damage

Cons

  • Can cause build-up in the long run
  • Leaves fine hair looking limp

Chief Ingredients:

  • Moroccan argan oil

Silicones Present - Yes

  • Frizz Control - 4/5
  • Moisturizing Power - 4/5
  • Affordability - 5/5
  • Damage Repair - 3.5/5
