How I selected the best shampoo for black colored hair?
After coloring my hair black, I definitely didn’t want to lose the color any time soon.
So I started looking for some shampoos in the market that claimed to help freeze the color on my hair. I selected these shampoos based on a few factors to make sure that I get the best results.
- Nourishing power: This is one of the most important aspects of selecting a shampoo. Subjecting your hair to hair color can cause a lot of dryness so I mostly selected shampoos with ingredients like Argan oil that guarantees to protect and lock in moisture on your hair.
- Hair color after the wash- The amount of color that goes down the drain is relatively low while using these shampoos which means that you do not lose the color or dye after washing your hair.
- Free from harmful ingredients- Colored hair is already vulnerable to a lot of dryness and damage so we do not want to use shampoos that contain harmful ingredients like sulfates, parabens, phthalates etc. So I have made sure to select these shampoos that are free of such ingredients.

Maple Holistics Argan Oil Shampoo
If you are a fan of Argan oil, this shampoo will not disappoint you.
I wanted to try this shampoo as it has Argan oil, which is also popularly referred to as “Liquid Gold” is an excellent ingredient for your hair. It is a great moisturising agent that hydrates your hair and makes it tangle-free.
Argan Oil also has Vitamin E in abundance which creates a layer of moisture on your hair and scalp to make your hair look shiny and frizz-free.
If you have unruly curls that are hard to manage and dehydrated, you should definitely add this shampoo to your hair care routine.
I found it made my black colored hair look shinier in just one wash. My hair also felt softer and smoother.
What I liked best about this shampoo is that while it's ideal for hydrating all hair types, you do not have to worry about it weighing down your hair.
It also contains a concoction of other nourishing oils like Botanical keratin, Peach Kernel oil, Almond oil, Jojoba oil, Camellia seed oil and Avocado oil.
For the hair that has been dry and dehydrated due to coloring, you can be assured that the shampoo will do good.
Another reason why it is soo good for your colored hair is that it is free of harmful ingredients like sulphates, parabens or silicones which could cause further damage and dehydration to your hair.
I didn't notice any drawbacks to this shampoo. But I have a dry scalp type. If you have oily hair this shampoo might weight hair down or cause more greasiness.
Pros:
- Contains Argan oil so it moisturizes hair and leaves it shiny
- Removes frizz as it contains hair smoothening keratin protein
- Sulphate free and paraben-free safe on sensitive scalp

ArtNaturals Argan Oil Shampoo
This is another shampoo that is enriched with argan oil to bring your dull and lifeless hair back to life. I simply loved it from the first time I used it.
The best part about the Artnatural Argan oil shampoo is that it contains with pure oils that enhance the artificial permanent and semi- permanent color on your hair.
It also contains other key ingredients like Aloe Vera and Rosemary. Aloe vera is a highly beneficial ingredient for your hair as it can hydrate hair without leaving it greasy.
So if you have black colored hair but also have an oily scalp, you can select this shampoo instead of the Maple Holistics Argan Oil one as this is less likely to leave hair greasy.
My favorite part about this shampoo is that it also helps in relieving inflammations, reducing itching, and soothing irritation on scalp. Some hair dyes might cause these issues, so a anti-inflammatory shampoo is a great idea!
This is a professional grade shampoo that penetrates deep into your strands to give you the best results. I noticed it working on my hair from the 3rd wash onwards.
I also liked that the rosemary essential oil in it improves the blood circulation on your scalp. This helps in stimulating hair growth and making your hair healthy and strong.
This is a gentle shampoo so it can be used regularly on your black colored hair. I also give this organic shampoo extra points for being vegan, cruelty-free, ethically sourced, sulfate-free, paraben-free and phthalates free.

How to choose the best shampoo for black colored hair?
If you're looking to buy a shampoo for your black-dyed hair keep the following things in mind.
Avoid Harsh Ingredients: You need to be careful with the ingredients your shampoo contains. Any harsh surfactant like SLS or SLES can strip hair dye causing you to recolor frequently than usual. Other ingredients like alcohol or added perfume can dry out hair that already lacks moisture due to frequent dyeing.
UV Filters: Some shampoos contains UV filters can protect your hair color from fading in the sun. So if possible go for these shampoos.
Nourishing Ingredients: Choose shampoos with emollients that preserve moisture of hair and humectants that add moisture to hair. So anything with argan oil, coconut oil, shea butter, aloe vera, etc. is a good shampoo for colored hair.
Hair Strengthening Formula: Dyeing your hair frequently (even if its just black color) can take a toll on hair. Your hairs cuticles can be opened, leading to frizz, damage, breakage and eventually hair loss. So ingredients like soy and milk proteins, keratin, biotin, egg proteins, etc. are great for adding integrity and elasticity back to black colored hair.
If you’re going from light to black hair, it’s a huge change. This hair color requires a lot of maintenance.
Your roots can begin to show if the black dye fades away leaving a weird, ungainly look.
So it’s best to use a special shampoo for black colored hair that will prevent fading and add to the life of your hair dye.
