What is a Closure Wig?

What is a Closure Wig

What is a Closure Wig? If you are looking to hide the fact that you are undergoing a hair loss treatment and want to wear a wig, then a closure wig is the best option for you! In this article, we will tell you all about this popular style of wig and its benefits.

Finding the right wig for yourself is always a hard task because in the present day, the world of wigs has evolved to such an extent that wigs hardly even look like “wigs” anymore. They are made in such a way that it looks like it’s the person’s natural hair.

Wigs come in so many different types, from regular wigs, to frontal wigs, to closure wigs etc., that come with synthetic, natural or blended hair types as well.

So that’s pretty much having too much of a choice, that will make it harder for you to choose the one you want, in my opinion!

What is a Closure Wig?

Well, if you are new to wearing wigs and are finding it hard to pick the right type of wig to wear, this article will let you in on what exactly these closure wigs are and when you would need to choose this type of a wig.

What does a closure wig mean?

A closure wig, also known as a  lace closure wig, is a type of wig that is used to add more hair volume to the top of your head at center and is often also used by those people who want to cover up their thinning hair near the hairline.

These closure wigs have a 4 X 4-inch U-shaped patch of lace or silk that consists of individually sewn in strands of hair, while wefts cover up the rest of the wig.

The purpose of these individual strand sew-ins are to make the hair look more natural and human-like, making it easier to part the hair at the center.

While partings can be taken an inch or two to the right or left of the center, the flexibility is only up to the 4-inch-wide margin.

But nevertheless, a closure wig was considered a better option for cover-ups and hair styling as compared to any other regular wig.

But in the present day, there are frontal lace wigs that are being sold and these wigs allow even more flexibility in styling as compared to the closure wig therefore, many people often have to make a choice between these two types.

What makes lace closure wigs different from lace front wigs?

Both these wig types can be considered similar because they differ only in certain aspects.

The lace front wigs have way more flexibility in styling and partitioning of hair because the lace with individual strands sewn-in covers the entire front portion of your head above your hairline.

These lace front wigs span a width of 13 inches (covering the head from one ear to the other) by 4 inches, height (13 X 4) and can vary if they are custom made.

So you can literally style your hair with a side part, center part or even try a one-sided flip hairstyle if you’d wish to.

While this is possible with a lace closure wig too, a one-sided flip or a far-ended side part will not be possible because the lace and hair which is styleable is restricted only to the 4 X 4 area.

This chart will help you understand the differences better. Check it out.

How do you wear a closure wig?

Step 1: Prep your hair for the wig

Prepping your hair before putting on your wig cap and wig, is very important. The process of prepping involves two simple things.

First, your hair needs to be clean. Yes, this means it has to be washed and is free from any oil, grease or dirt.

If your hair isn’t clean and then you put on your wig cap, there is a chance you could get an infection on your scalp once you sweat.

So wash your hair well and make sure it is completely dry before you put on the wig cap.

For people with shorter hair lengths, straight or fine hair, it will be easy to tuck your hair into the wig cap.

But for those ladies with frizzy, long, curly and voluminous hair types, tucking your hair into the wig cap will be a little difficult.

So this brings me to the second part of the hair prep – laying your hair down flat.

You could use clips, along with some hair styling gel or serum to comb your hair flat towards your scalp and for those with long hair, tie your hair into a bun, flatten it and then tuck it into the wig cap.

Step 2: Try on the wig to check its placement

The reason I always recommend this step before fixing the wig with glue onto your wig cap, is because you can make adjustments and check the placement of your wig to have a fair idea of how your wig will look once it has been fixed.

So all you need to do is, gently place the wig on your head, remember to start by putting on the wig from the back to the front and then trim off the extra lace from the front, so it matches your hairline and blends in perfectly.

Then once you are convinced of how your final look will be, move onto the next step.

Step 3: Use a wig adhesive to fix your wig

Once you have your final look in mind, you can finish off your wig fixing in no time. There are wig adhesives and wig adhesive tapes that are sold commercially.

You can use either one of these fixing alternatives and glue on the wig near your hairline.

Remember that if you aren’t using an adhesive that fixes immediately, then you will have to wait for a few seconds until the glue dries up a little so that it will fix your wig on firmly.

Note: If you are apprehensive of the adhesive getting stuck to your hair while taking off the wig, you can simply rub some adhesive remover or any hair oil over the stuck area, to help get it off.

Step 4: Setting and styling the hair

Once the wig has been attached firmly onto the wig cap, you can then part your hair the way you wish to and set your hair in place.

Here’s a finishing tip for those of you who feel like the colour of the closure lace doesn’t match your skin tone, you could simply brush a little of the foundation powder you use for your face at the parted area and that’s it, your style is complete!

Tips to Select the Best Lace Closure Wig

·     Buy a wig that matches your hair type and texture.

·     Buy a wig that fits you well. An incorrect-sized wig can damage your natural hair if it is too tight, while a loose wig will not sit firmly on your head.

·     Make sure your wig is of good quality, especially if you are a regular wig wearer.

·     Buy a wig to match the shape of your face.

·     Try buying a wig that has all-natural hair or at least a high percentage of natural hair (along with synthetic hair), so that the damage is lesser when it's styled with heat.

·     Make sure that the color of the lace matches your skin tone or at least find one closest to your skin tone, so you can then use a foundation powder to blend it in.

What is a Closure Wig: FAQs

What are the best brands of wig adhesives to buy?

You could try out brands like Miilye, Gummy Lace, Invisi Bond, GhostBond, ORS, Flawless Illusion, Bold Hold, etc. I would suggest buying an adhesive that is water-proof or sweat-proof.

Can I wear my lace closure wig when swimming?

Well, wearing a wig while going for a swim is not a recommended practice because the chlorine in the water will damage the wig hair, and also the wig can come off your head.

So if you wish to wear a wig while you go for a swim, you could consider using a water-proof adhesive while attaching your wig and buy a wig that has synthetic hair, instead of human hair.

If I sleep with my wig on will it get damaged?

Sleeping with your wig on is never a good practice because it can damage your wig, by knotting up the hair strands and ruining the way it's set.

So if you have a wig on and you do not wish to remove it when you sleep, then cover your head with a wig bonnet or scarf, so that there is no damage to the wig.

Make sure that your entire wig is kept covered when you sleep.

How often can I wash my lace closure wig?

You can wash your wig once every two weeks, or so I’d recommend.

But if you are someone who wears your wig often and sweats a lot, then you’d have to wash it once every week.

But frequent washing will wear off your wig sooner than expected.

The Final Takeaway

So for those who wish to go in for more styling flexibility, then you’d have to use a lace front wig.

If you want a wig for daily use and a center part would be good enough in terms of styling, then the lace closure wig will be a perfect choice.
